摘要

No. 71 (Eagle) squadron was formed in Church Fenton on 19th September 1940 and consisted of American national pilots and British groundcrews. Initially equipped, albeit very briefly with Brewster Buffaloes, the squadron flew Hurricane Mk 1s until April 1941 when it was reequipped with Hurricane Mk IIs. In June 1941 the squadron relocated to North Weald where it reequipped with Spitfire Mk IIs and later Mk Vs. The squadron flew sweeps into occupied France, along with bomber escorts and 'Rhubarb' missions and continued to do so until the unit was transferred to the USAAF in September 1942 where it became the 334th Fighter Squadron of the 4th Fighter Group.
