The diffusion transfer across a barrier with bumpy surfaces is studied for the first time. The perturbation method is used to determine the detailed field. For prescribed surface temperature (concentration) the increase in net flux cannot be attributed solely to the increase in surface area due to unevenness. Opposite phase bumps cause larger flux than in phase bumps.. the difference decreases with increased barrier thickness. The constant surface flux case induces local hot spots. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
