The 2009/10 Centre/South sugarcane crush reached 246.662 mln tonnes as of August 1, up 15.0% from 214.572 mln crushed by this time in 2008, the Sugarcane Industry Association (Unica) said. But the amount of cane crushed in the second half of July totalled only 35.905 mln tonnes, down 6.0% from 38.189 mln processed the same period last year, due to excess rains that slowed harvesting. The region produced 12.793 mln tonnes of sugar, tel quel, from April 1 through August 1, up 19.3% from 10.728 mln a year ago. Ethanol output totalled 10.555 bln litres, up 7.6% from 9.814 bln a year ago. Gasoline substitute hydrous ethanol output increased by 23.7% on the year to 8.180 bln litres from 6.610 bln, while gasoline additive anhydrous ethanol production fell 25.9% to 2.376 bln litres from 3.204 bln.
