Preliminary data on Renewable Identification Number (RIN) generation under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for April 2014 showed a six-month high for cane ethanol, reflecting temporary strong premiums of US prices over the Brazilian level. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that 643 D-3 (cellulosic biofuels), 215.2 mln D-4 (biomass-based diesel), 21.6 mln D-5 (advanced biofuels), 1.207 bln D-6 (conventional biofuels) and 1,882 D-7 (cellulosic diesel) RINs were generated (net) in April 2014. This brought net RIN generation so far in 2014 to 72,754 for D-3, 723.0 mln for D-4, 46.8 mln for D-5, 4.589 bln for D-6 and 2,354 for D-7. When compared with the proposed (but yet to be finalized) RFS for 2014, D-4, D-5 and D-6 RIN generation is on track. However, the volumes for cellulosic biofuels remain below the RFS proposal.
