DME appoints panel to probe North West seismic events

An expert panel comprising seismic researchers, rock engineers and seismologists has been appointed to probe the seismic events which rocked DRDGold's North West Operations in Stilfontein in March this year, the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) announced. According to Malebo Mahape, communication director: DME, the panel is expected to give "more clarity" into these events and how they can be prevented, once its work is completed. Led by Dr Ray Durrheim of CSIR Miningtek, it is expected to look into the underlying causes of the events, which left two people dead and at least 20 injured, after an initial inquiry could not conclude if they were natural or induced by mining activities.
