The next generation of safety features is putting the vehicle in control, as Vaughan Freeman discovers. UK road casualty figures are now at their lowest since records began but the scope for further reductions in fatal and serious injury accidents is still huge. Better brakes, multiple airbags, suffer car bodies and advanced crumple zones have all done their bit in more effectively protecting vehicle occupants in an accident. The challenge now is to prevent accidents happening in the first place by, in many cases, taking the initiative away from the fallible driver.
