The IMI recently joined the industry in mourning after the loss of one of its great figureheads, Sue Brownson OBE FIMI, who sadly passed away on Friday 10 May. We pay tribute to Sue for the great contribution she made to the motor industry and hear from some of those whose lives she influenced. Sue had been a fellow of the Institute of the Motor Industry since 1996 and was named as its President late last year. She had been a stalwart of the BMW brand for decades, and subsequently MINI too, dating back to the importer days, when she joined Blue Bell Wilmslow as Finance Director in 1975. Sue devoted her working life to the motor industry and the encouragement of small businesses, where she dedicated almost 40 years of service, mostly as Group Managing Director at Blue Bell BMW. In 1999 she was appointed to the board of the Motor Industry Training Council, was elected President of the National Franchised Dealer Association and President of industry charity BEN. Looking to the traditions of the motor trade, the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harnessmakers was important to her and was where she became a Freeman of the City of London in 1997 and Master in 2011.
