What we saw when the mining tax issue was resolved by new Prime Minister Julia Gillard over June 30 and July 1 was that the interests of multi-billion dollar miners like Rio are far removed from those of small miners. It was Marius Hoppers from BHP Billiton and Tom Albanese of Rio who cut the mining tax deal with Ms Gillard, Treasurer Wayne Swan and Resources Minister Martin Ferguson. And it was their spokesman, Mitch Hooke of the Minerals Council who purported to speak for the industry in welcoming the breakthrough deal.
