Coal and base metals key drivers for Sunshine State

A restructure within the Queensland Government has seen for the first time the area of geological surveying come under the one umbrella of mining and petroleum. Queensland Department of Mines and Energy deputy director of general mining and petroleum Malcolm Cremer outlined the changes to delegates at the Mining 2006 forum. Production of minerals from Queensland, excluding coal, reached 4.9 million dollars in 2004/05, with base metals the next main area of interest. The key reason for this is the world-class Mt Isa base metal province, which accounts for around 75 percent of all the state's production.
