A spiration of the knee is one of the most frequently per- formed outpatient proce dures for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. When all goes smoothly, it is one of the most satisfyingly productive and confidence-building of procedures. Very little can go badly wrong because this is "pussycat country." Neverthe less, it is traumatic for the doctor and the patient if things don't go well, and traumatic taps can obscure important diagnostic information.
