"This is an historic moment," said USMA Vice President Paul R. Trusten, R.Ph., as he and President Lorelle Young entered the research room at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, on 7 June 2010. Their mission: to research the details surrounding the Reagan Administration's cancellation of funding for the U.S. Metric Board (USMB) 28 years ago. Created by the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, the independent but powerless 17-member USMB was to have represented most sectors of American society in carrying out a policy of "coordinating the increasing use" of the metric system in the U.S.
