I bring you no magic formula. I do not know of one. However, I can put before you certain guiding principles which worked well in New Zealand. Be enthusiastic and confident that the changeover will happen. Ignore critics. Generate interest and enthusiasm. Keep it in front of people. Get alongside the news media. Feed them information in a form ready to publish or broadcast, whenever you can. In other words, develop good public relations. Concentrate on education. By this I mean formal education and every other aspect of education, particularly for young people. Give good service to everyone. This includes industries, consumers, house-wives, educationalists, managers, and motorists. In New Zealand, we issued eleven metric memos, available free from every post office, and we mailed to every household a 24-page booklet entitled At Home With Metrics. Many other publications were issued, mostly for specialized interests, and every serious inquiry was answered. We made accuracy, brevity, and clarity features of all our pronouncements. Under this heading I would add, be tolerant and realistic.
