Sackman 2 Architects Inc. of Coconut Grove, FL, was commissioned by DO & CO International, Miami, FL, to design a 50,000 sq. ft. two-story, in-flight catering facility directly outside Miami International Airport in Miami. Scheduled to be their first facility in the United States, the owners wanted to declare their presence in the U.S. market as an airline caterer by projecting the essence of flight.The appearance of the building alluding to an airplane was made even more critical due to the proximity of the project to the beginning of the main runway of the airport and the location on own of the busiest highway exchanges in the greater Miami area. According to the architectural firm, approximately 50 percent of all commercial and cargo aircraft coming and leaving the airport experience this building after they rotate or land since the building sits at the beginning of the busiest west to east runway. Also, one of the most important requirements for the Austrian-based company was time. To make up for lost time after the original site became unavailable, the project had to be fast-tracked.
