Wouldn't life be grand if we could anticipate with perfect accuracy how our best-laid plans would translate into reality? Boring perhaps, but grand all the same. The most accurate predictions, though, are anticipations of some degree of disconnect between our expectations and the outcomes observed. For educators, that disconnect can be exhilarating when a teaching experience goes surprisingly well, and demoralising when substantial effort yields outcomes that fall short of our dreams. Academics are subject to considerable pressures to present their efforts from a position of control, understanding and success. There is much to be gained, however, from openly sharing the insights derived from the 'Huh?!' experiences that make it clear we are not puppeteers masterfully pulling strings attached to our students, colleagues and institutions. This editorial is a call to the Medical Education community to engage in dialogue around those experiences.
