Modified psychodynamic treatment technique and therapeutic attitude in psychotherapy of people with psychoses

Psychodynamic psychotherapy for people with psychoses and, in a narrower sense, for people diagnosed with schizophrenia has a long tradition. In the past 30 years, however, it has predominantly developed outside the institutions and their curricula. From the theoretical considerations of Mentzos, Lempa and Montag a new modified treatment technique arises that will be described in this article. It delineates a treatment manual in the form of a toolbox, which describes tools for each stage and each degree of severity of a psychotic illness. A prerequisite for a successful use of these specific psychotherapeutic tools, which are selected to match the ego stability of the person concerned, is a specific therapeutic attitude essential for this type of psychosis therapy. The toolbox thus makes it possible to initiate therapeutic processes in patients with acute as well as long-term psychotic illnesses of any degree of severity.
