Die Bedeutung empirischer Forschung für die Psychoanalyse

This article reviews negative attitudes against empirical effectiveness research among psychoanalysts. Recently this research critical attitude seems to have received theoretical support from the concept of “cultures of knowledge”. Some authors came to the conclusion that empirical effectiveness studies are not suitable for psychoanalytic treatments because psychoanalysis has a completely different culture of knowledge than cognitive behavioral therapy. In the opinion of the author this conclusion cannot be justified as different research questions require different methods. Freud’s junctim between research and practice is still valid but not suitable for questions on effectiveness. In assigning different research methods to different research questions it is hoped to overcome many of the seemingly fundamental antagonisms between empirical research and psychoanalysis.
