Lionel R P Pugh CBE VRD, 1916-2002

Aqualified accountant, Lionel Pugh began his working life in 1933 wit Deloitte, Plender, Griffiths. During the Second World War he saw active service, largely in the Mediterranean theatre, as an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Lionel entered the steel industry in 1947, when he joined the staff of Guest Keen Baldwins Iron and Steel Co Ltd, and by 1965 he was General Managing Director, Commercial and Administration, of what bad become the GKN Steel Co Ltd. Shortly afterwards, when the industry was nation-alised in 1967, he was appointed to the headquarters staff of the new British Steel Corporation as Director in charge of the Product Coordination Division. Following several changes of responsibility he became Managing Director, Supplies and Transport, and then in 1972 a member of the Board of the Corporation.
