A series of experiments were performed under various strain ratesand strain states during superplastic deformation of a fine-grained 5083aluminum alloy. Uniaxial tensile tests, rectangular pans, hemispherical andcylindrical capped parts were superplastically deformed to study the effects offorming rates and strain states on the nucleation and growth characteristics ofcavities. The results showed that cavity fraction increased with increasingtemperature due to greater grain growth. Strain states did have an effect on thecavity fraction in formed parts. A two-step strain rate deformation process couldreduce cavitation.
