BMW is currently introducing the new six- and four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engines with High Precision Injection into the European markets. The spray-guided 2nd generation direct-injection combustion system with centrally positioned, outward opening piezo-injector eliminates the disadvantages of the wall-/airguided 1st generation DI combustion systems and realises the thermodynamic potentials of the stratified operation into customer-relevant benefits for fuel consumption and dynamics. Including energy management measures, NEDC fuel consumption is reduced by up to 14% vs. BMW VALVETRONIC engines with similar displacement, while at the same time complying with EU4 exhaust gas regulations. The fuel consumption advantage will also be realised by the customer. Despite the complex exhaust gas aftertreatment using NO{sub}x storage catalysts, the new engines are taking the top positions among their competition with respect to performance and dynamics. After the successful worldwide introduction of the BMW VALVETRONIC in 2001 and after start of production for the new BMW six-cylinder Twin-Turbo petrol engine with High Precision Injection in 2006, the launch of the new six- and four-cylinder petrol engines with stratified combustion is the next step of the BMW strategy for the implementation of efficient dynamics.
