Intermet Plans New, 40-Million dollars Ductile-Iron Foundry in Mexico, to Start in '04

Intermet Corp. sketched out plans for a new a ductile-iron foundry in Monterrey, Mexico, to produce automotive structural and safety components. Typical products of the new facility will be steering knuckles, control arms, and brake calipers, and brackets. Troy, MI-based Intermet is one of the world's largest manufacturers of powertrain, chassis/suspension, and automotive structural components. Construction of the 100,000-ft~2 green-field plant will start before the end of this year with operation due to begin midway through 2004. Intermet plans to install two casting lines with vertical, flaskless molding; medium-frequency induction furnace melting; a coldbox coremaking operation; and highly automated line for finishing and validating castings. No equipment contracts have been announced. Intermet said at full production the new plant will have annual revenues of about 40 million dollars and potential for expansion further into ductile iron production or into the company's proprietary BlueSand aluminum casting process.
