Aerospace engineering: The use of 'new' materials allows the Airbus A380 to meet its performance targets

The design of the Airbus A380 is expanding the boundaries of engineering technology in many areas, with weight savings, cost efficiency and maximum capacity as key engineering goals for the project, To help achieve these goals, while meeting stringent safety and performance requirements, Airbus appointed SKF as one of its main partners for the project, This decision was, in part, based on the proven expertise of SKF Aerospace France, a company within SKF's Aerospace Group offering a range of products and technologies that are specifically designed to address the aerospace industry's unique requirements. The French operation is focused on three broad product ranges: rods and structures for structural and flight control applications; ball, roller and spherical plain bearings for landing gear, flight control and engine links; and mechatronics, including position and force transducers, together with linear and rotary actuators. All of these areas of expertise were called on for the Airbus A380 project.
