The winter of 1998 has been mild. Apple trees have had ample opportunity to accumulate winter hardiness throughout the fall and should have reached full hardiness. In general, orchard size permitting, dormant pruning should be delayed past the coldest part of the winter (past mid-February) to avoid severe winter freezes. If possible, the pruning of young or vigorous trees should be delayed until the end of the winter.
