AbstractStudies on the diurnal rhythm of Blattella germanica L. (Orthopt., Blattellidae) 1. Nymphs and malesThe diurnal rhythm ofB. germanicanymphs and males are recorded at 29°C, 80 RH and a light period between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., by using infrared light barriers and data processing units under computer control.The nymphs produce more activity during the “light‐on” period than during the “light‐off” period. The activity peaks are significant at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The feeding place is probably identified by smell. Their ability of topographic learning is not yet completely developed.The males display an activity four times higher than the nymphs, and during the “light‐on” period they are nearly as active as during the “light‐off” period. The activity curve shows maxima at 12 a.m. and at 8–9 p.m. An aimed orientation to the watering and to the feeding place occurs. Their pronounced exploratory activity moves on a high level.ZusammenfassungDie Tagesrhythmik vonBlattella germanicaNymphen und Männchen wurde bei 29°C, 80 r. F. und einer Lichtphase von 7‐19 Uhr mittels Infrarotlichtschranken und Auswertelektronik untersucht.Nymphen waren in der „Licht‐an”‐Phase aktiver als in der „Licht‐aus”‐Phase. Aktivitätsma‐xima traten um 8 und um 14 Uhr auf. Die Lage des Futterplatzes scheint olfaktorisch festgestellt zu werden. Das topographische Lernvermögen der Nymphen ist noch nicht voll ausgebildet.Männchen waren viermal aktiver als Nymphen und in der „Licht‐an”‐Phase fast so aktiv wie in der „Licht‐aus”‐Phase.
