Last year's poor quality grape harvest could be a blessing in disguise for Ontario's 500 growers this crop year. It will pull down the five-year brix (sugar) average and likely translate into more premiums paid to growers who saw the farmgate value oftheir crop drop 10 per cent due to low sugar levels last year. Wineries and distillers pay a premium for quality grapes that are above the five-year brix average and less for grapes below the average. A base price is negotiated each year by the wineries and the Ontario Grape Growers' Marketing Board.
