Plant temperature influences the speed with which a plant develops. Growers should regulate the climate in the greenhouse on the basis of plant temperature rather than air temperature in the house. But in practise this hardly happens. Is it so difficult? PRO in Naaldwijk and A&F in Wageningen looked for the answer. An infrared (IR) plant thermometer measures the temperature over an area of 5 to 10 m~2. This sensor can be linked to all current climate computers. A few computer systems also have the opportunity to allow the plant temperature to have an influence on regulating the climate. In practise this option is hardly used. Is this because it is too complicated? Applied Plant Research (PPO) Naaldwijk and A&F in Wageningen, the Netherlands looked at tomatoes to see if it was possible to regulate the heating, ventilation and screens on the basis of plant temperature. At the same time additional sensors were used to see how it is possible to prevent the crop becoming too wet and if it is possible to develop a energy saving regime.
