The city of Rome with the regions Lazio and Abruzzo has a population of 4 million. These are supplied with fresh produce by the wholesale markets in Fondi (100 km south of Rome) and Guidonia Montecelio (Centro Alimentare Roma - CAR) in the East of thecity. Mauro Ottaviano, Director of the operating company Cargest, sees a clear trend towards regionaliza-tion of thefresh produce range."In 2008 we handled 850,000 t fresh fruits and vegetables, plus 60,000 t seafood. 80% originate from Italy, 20% are imported." More than 50% of the Italian goods-350,000 t - are delivered from the region.
