A new trade agreement has opened up the Chinese market to Australian table grapes. After eight years of research and consultation, a set of guideline protocols has been put in place to prevent table grape pests and diseases arriving in China. Under the deal, signed October 11, grapes will be exported under strict quarantine conditions: all grape growers intending to export of China will be required to register with the Australian Table Grape Association; growers will be required to monitor and recordtheir crops and apply control measures if any pest or disease is found. Grapes bound for China must be kept in cool storage (at 1 degree for 16 days, or at 2.1 degrees for 21 days). Prior to export, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service willinspect produce.
