At this year's International Apple Trade Show Interponía held in early November in Bolzano, Italy, the Italian Tree Nursery Consortium CIV in Ferrara introduced five new apple varieties: Gaia, Gemini, Renoir, Smeralda and Fujion. Following the successful market introduction of the apple varieties Rubens~R and Modi~R developed by CIV, the consortium presented the results of their latest research. "These apples are genetically new varieties, not mutations of existing ones," says Michelangelo Leis, Breeder of CIV. "They are unique because they are resistant to apple scab and sweet at the same time. Most scab-resistant varieties on the market are tart and not much loved by the majority of consumers. Furthermore, we detected no diseases during the storage tests we have performed so far.
