Sergio Ruiz Tagle Humeres is a fruit man. Back in the 1950s he started to export fruits of other producers. Situated some 40 km from the capital Santiago in Pol-paico, he has been active as a key producer/exporter of table grapes, apples and pears since 1962. Later he added growing areas for apples in Curico, and in the 1970s he purchased land in Copiapo for table grape cultivation. Together with Adolfo Prohens he counts among the pioneers of table grape production in the Copiapo valley where he is one of the major landowners. Due to the valley's exposed position it became possible to supply the markets - mainly in North America - with fresh table grapes from early November. In the center of the Copiapo valley the company grows table grapes on 120 ha, says Rafael Concha Ey-azaguirre, Chief Financial Officer. Packing of the grapes takes place in three plants in the valley, in Villa Maria, Pabellon and Tropicana.
