Decline of Russian sector

Privatisation and frequent changes in regulations has caused the greenhouse sector in Russia to fall rapidly over the last decade but some big units, with relatively modern equipment, remain around the big cities and more are being built. A the end oflast year Russia closed its borders to fruit and vegetable imports from many EU coun- tries while its own greenhouse industry is also floundering. The original reason for the import ban was phytosanitary problems but it later transpired that it wants all products entering from the EU to have undergone a uniform inspection system, a bottleneck which is now in the process of being resolved. In Russia itself, the area of glasshouse-grown vegetables has fallen three fold within the last 10 years to 1.300 ha. The reason is largely the changes in the economic situation in the country.
