Supplementary lighting is allowing tomato growers to produce year round which puts them in a strong position when signing contracts with retailers. "I think that within ten years 300 ha of tomatoes grown in the Netherlands will use supplementary light ing," says Leo Verkade, of Agrocare, one of the first growers in the country to use lights over his tomato crops. Agrocare, a company owned by three partners has four separate glass greenhouses, totalling 25ha, and a fifth house under construction. The l ast house, which was completed last year is fully lit and the new 7.5 ha glasshouse will also be fitted with lighting and screens.
