A recent report, Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Production Forecast: 2009 - 2018, published by the Minerals Management Service (MMS), forecasts increasing oil and natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) in 2009. Oil production will continue to increase through 2018, while GOM gas production, during this same time, is expected to level off, decrease slightly in the next few years, then increase from 2014 to 2018. A second MMS report, Deepwater Gulf of Mexico 2009: Interim Report of 2008 Highlights, found that deepwater production continues to be a "very important" part of total GOM production.
