Prairie nutrition and dietetic research days - Balancing practice with research in the real world

For many people, the prospect of participating in research is anxiety-provoking. There is a common belief that research can be conducted only by individuals with graduate degrees or with an in-depth understanding of statistics and research methods. We believe that dietitians, nutritionists and dietetic interns have the skills to conduct research based on their day-to-day experiences; we all ask questions and seek answers daily. For example, we unwittingly use research skills in deciding to buy a used car using the following steps: 1. Review used car guides and ask family members/friends about their cars (literature review) 2. Make a list of requirements such as price, model, colour, mileage, etc.(inclusion criteria) 3. Decide means to find a used car: auto trader, newspapers, Internet, etc. and days of the week to review them (method) 4.View and test-drive a few cars; have cars of choice mechanically inspected (data collection) 5.Compare findings about each car (results)6. Buy the car that meets your criteria; tell family/friends about your decision (discussion/conclusion).
