Beware the concept of a 'forestry Nirvana', warns David Talyor - it doesn't exist. It's not all that surprising that we talk of Britain's forests, conceived by scientific principles, nurtured by forest economics and largely owned and administered bya government department, in rather stilted terms. The British people have long since lost any forest tradition they might have had centuries ago. Multiple objectives, the delivery of public benefits and broad, often rather nebulous principles of landscape value seem, these days, almost as a series of multi-coloured overlays thrown onto the now outmoded single-coloured map of our simple, producing, economically-justified plantations.
