With timber markets: shrinking it's only natural that chainsaw men and women are looking at other ways of making a bob or two with their existing equipment. 'Chainsaw carving has many of the attributes required by the individual when thinking about diversification'. So says Andy Reynolds, who, with veteran carver Mick Burns, has established a specialist carving course (FBT September p11) for chainsaw users looking to branch out. Here they run through some of the baisics involved in carving. With chainsaw carving there are three basic phases to thechainsaw work. The first is the blocking out, which gets rid of most of the extraneous material. This takes the form of bold straight cuts and uses a standard saw and bar: larger for big timber and smallerfor the medium sized work.
