'The Ayrshire and Arran woodland strategy addresses the importance of timber to the ... economy, (its) transportation and forestry grants': this was the judges' comment which led to the scheme's entry winning a place in the 'Scottish awards for quality in planning' competition. The plan, reports the Forestry Commission, was also attracting interest from many quarters including Europe as an 'examplar of best practice in integrating forestry planning with its wider land-use aspects'. Launched last January, it is one of the first five examples in Scotland of local forestry strategies receiving financial support from the Scottish Executive in the form of special grants. These aim to stimulate the types of woodland planting they promote, with the objectof achieving well-designed woodlands producing high-quality timber, riparian woods, post-mining landscape restoration and urban and farm woodlands.
