UPM's North West England based assistant forest manager, Guy Warren, explained: 'In recent years the Thirlmere area has been improved by the felling of some conifer, but restoration work here is sensitive and not able to be carried out in one operation. 'Therefore United Utilities, owner of the reservoir and its 4800 hectare estate, is embarking on a three-year felling programme to replace the intrusive exotics with new native woodland, achieved mostly through natural regeneration.
