Effects of diets containing infant formulas supplemented with probiotic bacteria and prebiotics were investigated on Fe bioavailability in rats. The diets consisted of 7 powder follow-up infant formulas containing probiotics (Bifidobacterium bifidum and Bifidobacterium longum), prebiotics (galactooligosaccharides (4'-GOS) at 1.2, 5 and 10%) or synbiotics (bifidobacteria and 4'-GOS at 1.2, 5 and 10%), which were administered to weanling rats over 30 days. Fe balancing analyses (determination of mineral apparent absorption and retention ratios) were carried out in 3 periods of 72 h each. Administration of any of the test diets increased apparent Fe absorption or retention in all test periods; however, only 10% prebiotic and synbiotic diets significantly (P < 0.05) increased apparent Fe absorption and retention during the 3 periods of mineral balancing when compared to the control group. A linear regression study demonstrated that stimulation of Fe absorption took place mainly in the colon portion of the gut, since a multiple linear relationship was observed between Fe absorption, crypt depth of proximal colon and pH colon content (R2 = 0.56).
