Canadian food industry awaits details of new food safety initiative

Canada's federal and provincial agriculture ministers have announced an initiative to improve food safety, and food industry representatives are waiting to see what changes it will bring.The ministers made their announcement July 10 during their annual mid-summer meeting but provided few details, declining requests for additional information before Food Chemical News went to press. In a statement, the ministers say simply that the food safety system must protect and enhance public health, maintain consumer confidence at home and ensure international competitiveness. They say officials were instructed to take a national, science-based approach to food safety programs and work on three key areas: enhanced surveillance, pathogen reduction in meat and poultry and common meat hygiene standards.
