This article discusses the areas which have to be covered in an analytical program to provide nutrient data that satisfy criteria for inclusion in a national food composition database or a product endorsement program such as the National Heart Foundation's Tick Program (defining desired study outcomes, information needed in planning, collection of nationally representative samples, funding of project, commissioning laboratories, time needed, analytical quality control, data scrutiny and interpretation, teamwork, essential documentation, time frame and data publication).
