A tribute to professor Amartya Sen on the occasion of his receiving the 1998 Nobel Prize for Economics

Professor Amartya Sen's contribution to our understanding of the causes of food insecurity, famine and poverty is incalculable. The acknowledgement of his work with the 1998 Nobel Prize for Economics should please all of us who have learnt from his insightful and lucid analyses of critical issues in development theory and practice over the past three decades. For, as he himself says in concluding a recent paper on 'Hunger in the contemporary world', "Clarity of diagnosis can be critically important for treatment and cure" (Sen, 1997).
