The science of biological genetic engineering has been around for years. But ever since scientists discovered they can alter nature by adding to or modifying its genetic structure, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), scientists have set a goal of producing a blue rose, since one does not occur in nature. Early work on altering genetics to achieve color modification was done by Dr. Gert Forkmann, Technical University of Munch-Weihamstephan, Germany. Gert spent more than 20 years establishing the fundamental steps in the process that governs flower color. His work has led to the use of gene isolation as a tool for studying gene expression and eventually genetic modification.
