In mid-November 2010, I was honoured to have the opportunity to present a paper reviewing the world carbon black industry and suggesting a few pointers for the industry's future. The event was IntertechPira's Eleventh Biennial Conference and it was held in Rome. The last Intertech Carbon Black Conference at which I presented a paper - during the final year of the last century - was also held in Italy, in Padua (aka Patavium) in fact, the oldest city in the country, founded in 1183 BC, 430 years before Romulus founded the "eternal city" of Rome. Maybe these ancient settings are considered appropriate for carbon black, which is after all one of the oldest pigments known to mankind.
