Oil spill leads to fame and fury for makers of dispersant chemicals

Water treatment chemicals firm Nalco has found its name linked to the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico because its line of surfactants and solvent blends named Corexit is the only dispersant that BP is using to clean up the oil leaking from a damaged pipe 5000 ft below the Gulf's surface. More than 1 M gallons of Corexit have been used in the Gulf as of 6 Jun 2010. Of that amount, roughly 303,000 gallons have been injected underwater at the site of the leaking well.
