A dynamic design for a garden passageway: A transitional space can be a destination in its own right

When I moved into my home 12 years ago, I felt constricted by the amount of space available for gardening. My humble 40- by 80-foot lot was monopolized by my 1889 Victorian house, with a small front yard, a tiny backyard, and a narrow side yard. I knew I would have to make the most of every square inch of space. The front and back were no-brainers: The front would be a public space with bold plantings to be viewed from the street and sidewalk; the backyard would become a private oasis, a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
