Hansenula polymorpha has become an acknowledged model organism in basic research and biotechnological applications. In 2000 its increasing significance led to the launch of a conference, to be held every second year, and dedicated to the various aspects of this methylotrophic yeast. Contributions from participants of the first conference in Dusseldorf in 2000 [1] resulted in a first monograph on this organism [2]. The Second Hansenula polymorpha Worldwide Network Conference (HPWN) was held on 27-28 September 2002 in La Laguna, Tenerife (Spain), hosted by Jose Siverio and his group from the local university. Again, the stimulating atmosphere of the small, focussed conference with 55 participants provided a sound platform for the presentation of the advances in research and for scientific exchange.
