Plan aims to remove more sheep despite worries

The past 15 years have seen the north of England take the full brunt of the government's plan to de-stock vast areas of fell grazings. Despite deepening concerns among the dwindling hill farming community, a radical new plan to increase the rate and number of sheep being removed from one of-the UK's iconic upland landscapes is now on the agenda. At a time when hill farmers are calling for a moratorium on de-stocking and greater input into environmental decision making, the Lake District National Park has made it clear it wants even more sheep taken off the Cumbria fells. The Park's plan is to restructure hill farming in the Lake District and to realign its purpose, turning it from food producer to environmental guardian.
