OSR yield barrier pushed by conventional variety

The oilseed rape yield barrier is being pushed on again by a new-conventional open-pollinated variety, maintaining the 1% year-on-year yield increase for oilseed rape on the HGCA Recommended List. Sesame from LSPB is the highest yielding variety on the east/west list at 110% of controls. That puts it 3% ahead of DK Cabernet in the region, and 1% ahead of top hybrid PR46W21, says Jim McVittie, HGCA's Recommended List manager. "Sesame looks to be a really good variety. It has a five for stem canker, which is not the best, but is controllable and it is stiff." The variety is relatively late to mature, but this is nearly always the case with high-yielding varieties as they need a longer growing season, he adds. That means it had been given a maturity rating of four, the same as DK Cabernet. Sesame is also under test in the north and is a candidate for the region in 2011.
