A staggering 5.7t/ha oilseed-rape yield is either dismissed as pub talk or something that will make you sit up and want to find out more. For Yorkshire grower Jonathan Hodgson it's an almost embarrassing size of crop he's harvested this year. But he insists it is the product of a planned and measured approach to boosting yields, and now he's reaping the benefits. "Tell other farmers you're getting 5.7t/ha and they say you're talking rubbish. But sowed and fed correctly, this land will chuclc some stuff out," he says. With 300ha of medium to heavy clays near the sea at South Frodingham, Hull, he has focused in recent years on improving the agronomy of his crops through precision farming.
