The challenge for today's farmers is to find a way to finance 20, 30, or even 40 years in retirement. This can be complicated while supporting a growing family and developing the farm business. "A century ago, retirement planning was easy. You kept farming until you dropped dead, or when your knees gave out, your family looked after you - if you were lucky," says Shelagh Hamer, pension specialist at NFU Mutual.
